Why Schedule A Photography Lesson?

Whether you’re new to fly fishing and want to start capturing your time on the water, or you simply want to take more intentional, striking images of wildlife and the landscapes around you, this 90-minute one-on-one lesson with Lael is the perfect place to start. Lael is a professional photographer with years of experience shooting in some of the most demanding outdoor environments in the Pacific Northwest and beyond — and in this session, he brings that expertise directly to your camera. You’ll get a hands-on walkthrough of your specific camera body and its settings, with practical guidance tailored to the subjects you actually want to shoot, whether that’s the action of a cast, the stillness of a river landscape, or the wildlife that calls these waters home.

A significant part of the lesson focuses on understanding your lenses and how focal length shapes the story your image tells. A 24mm or 35mm wide prime is ideal for pulling in the full environment — the angler, the river, the trees, and the sky all working together in one frame. An 85mm brings you in closer for more intimate, portrait-style shots that isolate your subject beautifully. And a 70–200mm telephoto gives you the reach to capture fast-moving action — a cast unfolding, a fish breaking the surface, a heron lifting off the bank — without disturbing the scene. Lael will help you understand not just which lens to reach for, but why, and how to pair the right glass with the right moment. Sessions are held via Zoom or in-person at a location in the greater Seattle area, making it easy to fit into your schedule year-round. Come with your camera, your questions, and a desire to see the water differently.
