Fish Alaska
Situk River with Glacier Bear Lodge
Yakutat, Alaska History
Glacier Bear Lodge was initially built as a logging camp around the mid-century 1900s ceased logging operations in the late 1960s and was then established as a fishing lodge. After its opening in 1973, Glacier Bear Lodge provided anglers from around the globe with world-class fishing for large runs of steelhead, coho, and sockeye salmon on the Situk River in Yakutat, AK. This part of Alaska is only accessible by boat or plane and is sure to stay within your heart as a special place for fishing and wildlife only a few short hours away from the Greater Seattle Area.
Glacier Bear Lodge is what keeps Yakutat, Alaska thriving and is the local watering hole and preferred dining option for many of the town’s residents. The lodge offers a full bar and kitchen with your favorite drinks available after your fishing day and fresh-caught seafood plates to enhance your experience. After finishing your dinner, remember to fill out your lunch card for your sandwich options the next day. Missing the sandwich isn’t bad, but not having the daily fresh baked cookies to eat after celebrating your catch is!
What to Expect
Retaining Steelhead within this catch and release only fishery is not permitted, but the lodge staff will happily fillet your Halibut catch or other ocean-caught fish. If you are interested in retaining fresh salmon from the river, please inquire about our coho or sockeye trips that are available in June/July or September/October. Vacuum packing (approx $1.50 per pound & wax boxes $13 each) and flash freezing allow for easy transportation back to your destination. Prepare your family and get your summer BBQs ready!
Your guide will provide all tackle needed for your trip, but there is a tackle shop located above the bar, and near the lodge manager’s office in case you would like to try some gear of your own. Featured in this store is a product all will become familiar with during your stay called Natr'l Beads, a bead specifically created for steelhead by your host/guide Lael Johnson.
